Begonia sykakiengii is native to the Philippines and is prized for its distinctive foliage. The leaves range from dusky green to pink, accented with irregular silver-grey markings. While this species is a prolific bloomer, producing flushes of soft pink flowers, it is primarily cultivated for its striking leaf patterns rather than its floral display. The silver-grey colouration becomes more pronounced and intense when the plant is grown under bright, diffused light. Insufficient light results in leggy, elongated growth, whereas excessively strong light can cause the foliage colours to fade or appear bleached.
Light: Place the plant in a well-ventilated area whereby it can receive around 4-6 hours of bright but indirect sunlight daily. Like most Begonia, it will tolerate full shade i.e. no direct or filtered sun, but foliage growth will be less dense under such conditions.
Water: Prefers moderately moist soil, not too dry, but never consistently wet. Allow the top 2cm of soil to dry before watering again. Overwatering can lead to root rot and leaf drop, while letting it dry out completely may cause wilting leaves.
Temperature: Plant tolerates temperatures from 18-28C.
Fertilizer: An all-purpose, water-soluble balanced fertilizer that contains an equal amount of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (e.g. N-P-K: 15-15-15 +TE) will help to boost the plant’s overall health by feeding it every two weeks. Otherwise, a slow-release fertilizer (e.g. Osmocote) can be incorporated into the potting media, and to be replenished after about 2-3 months. Do follow the recommended dosage indicated on the fertilizers application instructions.
