Magnolia kobus

Once established, Magnolia Kobus produces abundant perfumed white flowers on bare branches before the leaves appear. Initially pyramid in shape, once mature the tree has an attractive rounded form. This tree is trouble-free and offers many landscaping options for the home gardener. When young, this deciduous magnolia may have multiple stems arising from the base, and it can be allowed to mature in this way. If you prefer a more traditional single-trunked tree, train a central leader to produce this umbrella effect. The tree is frost-hardy and prefers full sun to part shade in a sheltered position.

Soil: Rich loam, free draining
Conditions: Cool temperate, warm temperate

Magnolia kobus blooms in the early spring, bearing pleasantly fragrant white flowers with hints of pale pink about 4 inches in diameter. The flowers are produced before the leaves, as with most members of Magnolia sub-genus Yulania. Young trees do not flower.
